Specimen Provision

General requirements when providing material are as follows:

  • Whole Specimens

The specimens shall be preserved in ethanol and should be shipped in numbered vials. Multiple specimens of the same genus may be placed in a single vial(s). Specimens should come with an accompanying sheet (or file), listing Order, Family, genus and general collection site (east or west of the continental divide). For a list of the required genera please contact the program coordinator.

We are able to provide remuneration if required at a rate of $2 per whole specimen.

  • Mounted Specimens

Glass slide mounts of Chironomidae and Oligochaeta are required. The program requires permanent mounts in either Canada Balsam or Polyvinyl lactophenol, or equivalent. Single specimens per slide are desirable, and where required for identification purposes specimens should be sexually mature (e.g. Tubificidae). Slides should be numbered and a separate list indicating Order, Family, Genus and general collection site (east or west of the continental divide) should be provided.

We are able to provide remuneration if required at a rate of $3 per whole specimen.

  • Images

Images are required for use in the Level 1 (Family) certification. We would like to receive the image sets in digital JPEG formatted files. Each image set should contain the characters required to identify the specimen to the family level. The files should be numbered and a corresponding sheet (or file) with the image number Order, Family and Genus provided. We are able to provide remuneration ($10 per image set) if required.
